Zondag 22 maart aanstaande tussen 14.00 en 17.00 geef ik in Treehouse een workshop creatief schrijven die helemaal gericht is op het belang van de setting. Deelnemers worden gevraagd een foto mee te nemen van een plek die voor hen belangrijk is. Een plek die meer is dan zomaar een decor, maar verhalende betekenis heeft. Interesse: mail lies@storyshop.nl of schrijf je hier direct in. Met een stadspas kost het je 6 Euro en zonder 45 voor 3 uur.  

On Sunday 22 March, between 2 pm and 5 pm, I will be running a creative writing workshop at Treehouse that focuses entirely on the importance of setting. Participants are asked to bring along a photo of a place that is important to them. A place that is more than just a backdrop, but has narrative significance. Interested? BODIES of WORK / solo part of Selfie van de Ziel NDSM FUSE Amsterdam

BODIES of WORK is my first solo exhibition, bringing together a number of new and old canvases, textile works, photostickers, sculptures and installations. The title has a dual meaning. On the one hand, it is a generic word for “oeuvre” and I am showing part of my expanding visual and narrative work. On the other hand, it is a plea for the physical (the body) as a symbol of human vulnerability, and an attempt to manifest (female) power in a world that is still burdened by patriarchal systems and inequality. Work also refers to the work it takes to survive, the burden we carry with us, the burden I carried on my shoulders, the heaviness that has settled in my hips. The expanding oeuvre, the expanding hips. Working is good, but what are we working towards? Rest is necessary in this overheated world. Rest is revolution. Let us lie down.

This presentation is part of a larger exhibition under the title Selfie van de Ziel. And covers, besides my work (mini) solos of the following artists: Fabian Gruau, Ossa Kierkegaard, DH Mack, Kjell van Norel, Francesco Zorzi. Each of us may cover 70 m2 projectspace and each of us show unpolished personal stories each in a different way. Feel welcome.

In my work, I often explore the physical as a longing for a more human world. As psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk states: ‘Western culture is extremely disembodied. We constantly think with our heads and rarely feel with our bodies.’ The series BODIES of WORK began during the pandemic and attempts to break through the disembodied era.

TO THE MOON expo


What better reaction to the worlds despair, than to gather some feminist artists, and howl together at the moon? Come check it out in june and july. My contribution to To The Moon will be a huge sculpture the large sleeping lady: Spoon and some surprise works. There will be art, performances and loads of lunar energy.

We, as women and artists, refuse to succumb the forces of violence and patriarchy, and have decided to come together to put forth an alternative perspective. Yes, we are afraid, but we are also angry.  And in this anger there is love and a desire to see the world on a better path than the one that aims at control, violence, war and suppression. We can provide space to connect, a collaberitive spirit, a place for ideas, for agency and for community. 

To this end we embody the moon, the archetypal feminine, the force that turns the tides with power and intensity day and night, again and again going from darkness to a new dawn.

Tactiel sculptuur SPOON op de Touch expo #Treehouse Pavillion

 



 Spoon is a true body size tactile sculpture that lies on the floor as if it is calmly asleep in the spoon position. A position most of us actually do every night, curled up and hidden in our beds, hiding away from the world’s despair. I think many people will recognize this escapist tendency: when the world feels hostile and dangerous – nothing gives more comfort than cuddling up in bed with a loved one. This sculpture invites visitors to cuddle up on the floor, and spoon the sculpture. Just looking at it, it expresses a kind of loneliness. This tactile sculpture is part of a – by now- larger collection of huge cushion like tactile sculptures that Aris made these last couple of years. The material, cotton filled with cheryy pits, follows the temperature of the person spooning the sculpture. The sculpture can also be heated on n electrical heater, the filling will The series started at the beginning of Corona, as a reaction to the more distant fysical behaviour and her conviction that in this screen age, in which humans are more and more related to their digital screens and less in contact with their senses and less convinced of the beneficiance of fyscial nearness and true bodily contact.

OOO [Out of office] 1e collage op schilderslinnen op Nieuw New Babylon expo

 In het voorjaar van 2024 nam ik deel aan een expositie met de titel Nieuw New Babylon in NDSM Fuse, gecureerd door Ellen Klijzing. Ik hing er een schilderslinnen op, een collage van geprinte iphonefoto's die ik naam gedurende mijn kantoorbaan aan de Zuidas. Een ervaring die voor mij als autonoom een behoorlijk vervreemdende ervaring was. Door de Zuidas en het kantoor als setting te zien, te fotograferen en die foto's te printen op de kantoorprinter, kreeg ik grip op de setting, om er ook achter te komen dat een kantoor niet mijn omgeving is. OOO, betekent in kantoortaal: out of office. Die melding stelde ik in uiteindelijk;)

Welcome in Paradise is a videowork and installation that adresses the importance of welcoming (climate crisis) asylum seekers instead of being hostile and focussing on the refusal of refugees in the Netherlands. Lies Aris rewrote the Genesis story, giving Eva the power. Eva, as the archetypal mother figure wants to take care of human race and nature. Instead of sending p[eoplke away: her style of leadeship is welcoming and kind. She represents a new style of leadership. Matriarchy above Patriarchy.

NEW DAY/ NEW SCULPTURE / #NEW EXPO


Treehouse is excited to invite you to the opening of our upcoming exhibition Hear All Voices this Thursday June 22nd at 18h.

In connection with Over Het Ij Festival's theme for this year, this 4-week long exhibition seeks to interrogate how (or if) our democracy supports or does not support the participation of every citizen in it. The 19 participating artists will invite you to reflect on stagnant forms of government and the flaws our democracies have shown in terms of inclusivity, accountability, transparency, environmental responsibility, and social and climate justice. After all, exploration and experimentation through art can bring new imaginaries that may serve as a starting point to build better systems.

Hear All Voices will also include a series of workshops and side-activities organised by the participating artists in relation to their featured pieces and/or their practice.

Performance @Symbiotics Festival / Treehouse NDSM in collaboration with Hetmoet publishers

Symbiotic Encounters is a 2-day performative art festival consisting of 8 performances conceived by Treehouse’s international artists-in-residence specially for the event, as well as an exhibition and an evening of live music.

The Treehouse community can be seen as a microcosmos composed of creatives from many different disciplines. Treehouse’s aim is to provide the best possible conditions for fruitful artistic cooperation to occur, inviting its creatives to step out of their individual practices to reflect on collective efforts. Can we put aside the excessive emphasis on competition we inherited from Darwinism and focus instead on interdependence to imagine different futures? What new ideas and approaches can originate from these interactions and exchanges?

The visitors will choose between 2 journeys, each of them including 4 multi-disciplinary performances. Before or after the journey, the audience is invited to visit the exhibition The Power of Collaboration, which includes 9 pieces from local artists.

I collaborated with Elte Rauch from HetMoet publishing. She was the voice and I the sculptor: We based the gathering around a book by Sinead o'Gleeson: Constellations. Audience could walk - sit lie or touch the soft installation: seemingly bodyparts, organs, the mother of all creatures: the womb. They were encouraged to use their senses whilst listening to the essays and poems and they were given blindfolds.

The connection by Rika Maja Duevel, Elizaveta Agrafenina & Ischico Velzel: an exploration of the interconnectedness and translations between music and painting.

Codo a codo by Rose Wildsmith & Kris Gonzalez: intuitive painting techniques, the power of gravity and music work together as an attempt to explore and materialise a synergetic process.

Unleashing Your Demons: An exorcism guided by Hessel Du Mark: if you have an excess collection of demons in your heart that you want to unleash, Hessel Du Mark will be your spiritual guide in this beautiful hip-hop ritual.


2nd journey on 15th of October at 18h and on 16th October at 15h*

Earthitude: a rite of remembrance by Yuk Lin and Philip Ling & Daria Fedorchenko: an immersive installation in the form of a ceremony, a reminder that we are a non-detachable part of our planet.

Constellations by Elte Rauch & Lies Aris: based on Sinéad Gleeson's book by the same name, the artists reflect on life, the (female) body, pain and perfection.

Lullaby for a Slow Apocalypse by Show Pony (Laura Nygren, Tatiana Rosa, Simon van Steenis & Alisson Wright): what if the end of the world is not the singular dramatic event we imagine but rather a glacial-paced transformation? It can still be scary but we can be comforted on the journey.

The Consent - large tactile sculpture as part of Collaboration Expo




The large tactile sculpture The Consent, by Judith Segers and me addresses the collaborative aspect of physical nearness between humans. Touching is a dialogue. Physical communication is a form of collaborating. 
How to respect boundaries? What to do in the grey area between a ‘yes and a no’? How to interpret silence? Those are questions that have led to the creation of this sculpture: a large colorful poof, that functions as a sort of a ‘play blanket’ for adults. 


The kickstart for our collaboration in this sculpture, was an article that cached our attention. It brought the news that in Spain in the summer of 2022 the government took on a new law, following other countries where the ‘yes-yes-rule’ was already made legal. A perpetrator may now be prosecuted for rape if the victim has not resisted. This new law also introduces the concept of 'incidental harassment' into the Criminal Code. 'Communications, behavior or sexual or sexist proposals' that put the victim in an 'objectively humiliating, hostile or intimidating' situation are therefore considered an offence. 

 

The ‘rules’ we grow up with being girls, are in a way infuriating. The judgements and female unfriendly reactions towards unacceptable behavior. 

‘She was asking for it…’ 

‘She didn’t say No’. 

‘She shouldn’t have cycled that silent path that late at night.’ 

The preparations many of us had to take care of: putting on our extra wide hoodies and our body curves covering clothes. Cycling home at night with the bike chain in our hands, ready to be able to strike back, and more.

And of cause we are not just talking about harassment towards women, but also children and men. 

 

We invite you to plunge into our sculpture, and test what you want to do.

Part of The Power of Collaboration expo at Treehouse NDSM

Exhibition opening times: Thursday to Sunday from 12h to 18h 

The Power of Collaboration is a month-long exhibition taking place at Treehouse NDSM, in which local artists address the immense potential -and nuances- of collective thought and action. The group show features 9 projects, as well as a series of lectures and workshops. We welcome you to the exhibition’s opening on September 15th at 18h.

Treehouse NDSM is an arts incubator located in Amsterdam’s creative heart. Our goal is to foster the growth of creatives from diverse disciplines and help them bring their projects to life. We do this by offering 105 individual and affordable studios for rent, access to exhibition spaces, and the opportunity of being part of a vibrant artistic community.

The Power of Collaboration attempts to move away from the (Western) focus on the individual and reflect on the vast network of connections and interactions at the base of any transformative action. Within a community (be that human, more-than-human or both), members collaborate for protection, nutrition, or just for help to get around. Even the smallest cooperation can have enormous implications and can drive the force of change needed to tackle the most urgent issues.

But these exchanges do not occur without tension. How do we navigate the strain between individuality and collectivity? What are the boundaries that we set for ourselves or are set for us? What are the conditions for real dialogue to take place? What would true interspecies cohabitation look like if we were to defy anthropocentric narratives based on domination?
